Hey everyone!

Big news.

We are having a baby!

We are super excited for this new adventure that we are on, and I can’t wait to share more.

I went back and forth on whether or not I wanted to share this directly on the blog, but many of you have been with me for years, and I haven’t really done a life update in a very long time.

I completely understand that a pregnancy announcement can lead to mixed feelings, and both good and bad judgment/advice/etc. Also, I do not plan on having things change around here on Making Sense of Cents, as personal finance is still what this website is all about.

Anyway, this is exciting news for us, as Baby Gardner is due in December 2021!

We are so excited to share that we will be starting our greatest adventure yet, and we can’t wait to show our new family member the world.

Pregnancy has been interesting so far, with lots of nausea (but I actually haven’t thrown up at all) for the past couple of months. Eating has been difficult, which feels crazy because I’m usually a huge eater and will eat anything. But, pregnancy has led to a lot of food aversions.

I am starting to feel better now, though, so I am hoping to get ahead in work, do as many fun things as I can, and prepare for the new family addition as best as we can.

I know that many of you are probably wondering (this is the number one question that I’ve received so far)- Our plan for right now is to live with our new family member on our boat. We plan on taking it slow but eventually doing a lot of travel with our new family member by boat, van, plane, etc.

Please leave a comment below:

  • If you have any books or blogs that you recommend I read about pregnancy, starting a family, work/life balance as a parent, traveling families, etc.
  • If you have any positive advice or kind words that you’d like to share
  • If you have any questions for me.

Thank you so much for following along on my journey over the years. Things are about to get even more interesting!

Have a great week!

  1. well what exciting news for your family! What wonderful adventures await you in the coming year.

  2. So exciting! Congrats! Babies don’t need much space and are very portable so living in a boat/van/whatever you choose is definitely possible. Excited to watch you on this next adventure! <3

    1. Thank you so much! We are very excited 🙂

  3. Congratulations!! I am pregnant as well and due in December 2021. My favorite books are Girlfriends’s Guide to Pregnancy and What to Expect when you are expecting.

What I learned is be kind to yourself. Your body is not going to feel and look as it used to be. That is ok. I also had to learn not to compare myself to pre-pregnancy version of me. Letting go of the comparison was freeing.

I am happy and excited for you!! 🙂

    1. Congrats! There are so many December babies – it is crazy! The hospital we were actually originally wanting to go to is actually already completely full for December births and has been for quite some time. Along with all of the OBGYNS within a 4 hour radius, haha.

Thank you so much for sharing your advice! 🙂

  4. Congratulations!! I am so happy for you!! You’ll soon be on a “kid boat.” YAY!

  5. Kathy

How wonderful for you both! Spend as much time on the boat as you can, when the baby starts to move around, you might not feel as comfortable having them on there until you can teach them safety! But what a great, fun alternative place to be; and you can tell him he spent his first months on your boat! Yes, I’m going out on a limb and betting it’s a boy, I felt exactly the way you describe with my first, a boy. Something about the hormones. With my girl, I felt just fine, food wise and all other ways! Wishing you all the best!

    1. Thanks Kathy! Do you live on a boat?

The baby is a girl 🙂 Funny, everything is different for everyone. I was told that since I’m so sick, I was most likely having a girl. And the blood tests showed that it’s a girl.

    Congratulations Michelle

  7. Hi Michelle! Long time reader/lurker here.

OMG awesome news, congratulation! Best wishes 🙂

  8. Congratulations to you both! Such happy news and glad you shared with us so we can follow along!

  9. Congratulations!! I’ve never been pregnant, but I do follow this account on instagram @peanut. They have an app, I think it’s sort of like a pregnancy tracking and social media for pregnant people! So exciting 🙂

    1. Yes, I’ve heard of their app. I’ll have to check it out.

  10. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

  11. Nancy

    Congratulations! So happy for you.
Nausea is just your body’s way of keeping you from toxins till the baby’s vital organs are further developed. Hopefully it will pass soon. It will be a joyous (and tiring) holiday season. I had my daughter in December as well.

  12. I’m so happy for you, Michelle! Babies are so much fun 💞. If you struggle to sleep, grab a pregnancy pillow! It made a HUGE difference between my first and second pregnancy 😆. Wishing you all the best on your new adventures!

    1. Yes, I bought one right away when my nausea was at it’s worst. I don’t use it currently, but I’m sure I will again very soon haha.

  13. Russell Ibarra

    Happy for you both!
    Congrats and Take care.

  14. Congratulations Michelle!
I’m so happy for you and your family.
    Best wishes to you.

  15. Hi Michelle! Congratulations on this fabulous news. My suggestion is to visit https://becomingusfamily.com/ , which is the website of international author, speaker and parenting expert Elly Taylor (who also happens to be a good friend of mine).

Elly is passionate about helping couples navigate the journey into parenthood.

  16. Nitin Khaire

Wow. Hearty congratulations to you. That’s wonderful news indeed. I will be praying for you and the little bundle of joy and of course, your hubby.

    Be blessed always. Amen.

  17. This is truly wonderful news. I am sooo happy for you both. I have been reading your blog for years! Welcome to the mummy club. My only words of love to you and hubby are once baby is here be kind to yourselves. Do what is best for you and your family. Advice from friends, family and the rest of world is awesome. But ultimately, do whatever works best for your family. Enjoy this time as it will speed by, take pictures and videos to record this time… As you will forget life before baby lol. Bless you both, praying for a stressfree, relaxed and beautiful birthing experience 🙂

    1. Such wonderful and exciting news for you both – and your little one will be so cared for and loved and spoiled. Do what feels right. And remember, this is the one time that your child will eat whatever you make.
Best wishes and health to you all!!

    2. Thank you so much. I appreciate the advice as well 🙂

  18. Congratulations, Michelle! One thing that helped our babies sleep well early on was to double swaddle them. We would first swaddle them in a light muslin baby blanket and then when they were all swaddled in that we would put a “sleep sack” on them…this seemed to give them an extra bit of comfort. Obviously every baby is different, but this is something that helped with ours!

  19. Cindy Lehman

That is awesome news, Michelle! Congratulations! All I have to say is, don’t miss a minute of that beautiful new life you’re bringing into this world! There is nothing more gratifying, more special, and nothing will every compare to it. You don’t need the books or articles or all the other mechanics that go along with being a mom, your child will tell you all you need to know, if you just be sure to listen! Again, congratulations and you will be an awesome mom and your life’s partner will be an awesome dad, I’m sure! 🌼

  20. Amy Fahnestock

What joyful news! You’re going to be parents – an amazing journey is ahead for you both. Congratulations, so happy for you!

  21. Liliana

    1. Thank you so much! I will look for this book.

  22. Congratulations! Truly one of life’s best miracles. You are blessed to have designed your life so you can work from home and spend that treasured time with your baby. That being said, perhaps now you would be interested in expanding your blog into how you set up your child for financial success. Would love to chat and you can check out my blog at almostfreefamilytravel.com

    1. Yes, I feel very lucky. I especially felt lucky that I didn’t have to go into work the past few months when I’ve felt awful. I don’t know how others do it – I was barely functioning there for a while, haha.

  23. Bethany Burge

Congratulations!!! What a huge blessing! Please follow TakingCaraBabies on Instagram. Great input on caring for a baby and sleep training (hers is a gentle approach). Her class on the ABCs of sleep were huge – not only telling us what to do, but why were doing it. Moms On Call was also super helpful with schedules and baby care. Most importantly, you are meant to be this baby’s parents and you will have wisdom on how to care for them beyond what you can imagine at this point!

    1. I’ll check that out, thank you!

  24. Sheila McVicar

    Congratulations, Michelle!
Welcome to the joys of having a beautiful son or daughter! Hubby & I made sure our sons were happy, healthy and well-rounded with anything their minds came up with. Believe me, the library was a god-send! Helping mommy with baking cookies, making homemade pizzas with their favorite toppings, picking up their toys…all became a game. I now have two son married and now have two grandsons that we adore! Life is good…even through Covid19!
    Have a wonderful time cuddling!

  25. Congratulations! You have been a huge inspiration to me for 3 years now. I started blogging as a mom which was not easy all the time but the best adventure in life for sure. I am so glad that you will also experience this misacle soon. My best wishes to you!

  27. Michelle,

Congratulations! I’m so happy for you I almost cried (this may be the post partum emotions speaking 🙂).

I used the Baby center app to keep track of everything (doctors appointments, notes, baby names, reminders, checklists etc). Hope you find it helpful and I’m manifesting a safe and happy birth experience for you.

  28. Congrats!!

    What awesome news!

  29. Congratulations! Thank you for sharing your news with us. I’ve been following your blog for approximately 2 years and was always curious as to how it would pivot if/when you decided to start a family. A book I found particularly helpful after I had my son is The Fifth Trimester by Lauren Smith Brody. Take care! <3

Congratulations! My babies are grown up adults, but I lived in a converted school bus with #2. We used a port a crib. Also, carried her around in an old timey baby backpack when she was so small she needed blankets to be wedged in. Modern day wraps will keep your girl close. 🧸

    1. Thank you! We are excited to travel with her 🙂

  38. Agnes

Congrats for th blessing!!! Babycentre.com and their app will help u now and all the way thru till baby is at kindergarten.

  39. Congratulations! I am so happy for you both! You are both wise people and will be great parents. I am a mom of 8 with my oldest being 22 and my youngest age 2. Married 25 years and they are all our biological children together. 4 girls, 4 boys. Here is the advice I give… https://neededinthehome.com/advice-for-a-new-mom-from-a-mom-of-8/

  40. So happy for you Michelle!! Congratulations to both of you!!

It looks like it’s going to be an epic adventure 🙂

Wish you all the best!! 😘😘

  41. What joyful news! Congrats to your entire growing family.

I, for one, will not mind reading any baby stories. ❤️ Also, as it turns out, there are lots of personal finance topics and money lessons that emerge from parenthood.

So here’s wishing you continued blessings in all that you do — personally and professionally. 🙏🏽

  42. Donna

Congratulations. This baby will have a lifetime of adventures.

  43. Congrats!

Side note: Your dog looks PISSED! Lol.

    1. Everyone keeps telling us that, haha! He’s quite old and I plucked him up from one of his naps and forced him to take a picture. Plus, he’s a Frenchie so they just naturally have too much personality, haha!

  44. Chris

Congratz on the new addition to your family! I am sure the upcoming baby will have a great time in your future adventures. A future generation of financial independent kiddo in the making. 🙂

Take care and always looking forward to updates on the blog and social platforms.

  45. Kevin D

Congrats! I have been following your blog for some time now, and I enjoy reading all your adventures (e.g. living on the boat) as well as your personal finance tips. I wish you well on this new adventure. Congrats and take care.

  46. Congratulations, Michelle! I’m a longtime reader and I am delighted to hear your baby news. All the best!

  47. Congratulations! So happy for you!

  48. Congratulations! I had a December baby myself (11 years ago this year!). My advice for any new parents is take all advice with a grain of salt and, ultimately, do what you feel is right for your family and not what you feel obligated to do. If it doesn’t feel right even though your mom and grandma and the neighbor all say the same thing, don’t do it!

  49. Clement

Baby Gardner is welcome in advance. Congrats.

  50. Rachel

    Congratulations 🎉

  51. Diana Pfalmer

Congratulations!! I just had my 2nd baby 6 weeks ago. Kids are a game changer for sure. Such a fun adventure. MamaNatural is a great resource for pregnancy and birth. 52. Tracy K

My kids are grown but I’ve found that the book series What to Expect When You Are Expecting, etc. have been a helpful resource that has stood the test of time.
    Congratulations!!!
Many new exciting adventures await. You will get a ton of advice but everyone has a different parenting style. My advice is to trust your own judgment and do what feels right for you as parents.

Congratulations! I am a Mama of 3 (7, 5, and 1). The Pregnancy Bible is a great resource and I used it when I took a Prenatal Class in college! Take your prenatal and postnatal vitamins! After your little one is born, the Happiest Baby on the Block is amazing and a great book for your husband is Be Prepared: A Practical Handbook for New Dad’s. Give yourself lots of grace and know that there is a learning curve. Cheering you on and sending positive vibes your way!

  73. Congratulations Madam. I am a new reader here and I am so happy to follow your blog and read this exciting news. I am waiting to see your beautiful baby. Do take care of yourself and the baby.

  74. Congratulations Michelle! I am a silent reader, but I have to comment on this one! Having a baby/babies is the best. We have 2 toddlers! I read mama natural week by week guide for pregnancy and child birth written by Genevieve of mamanatural.com. It’s a good one. Have a safe pregnancy and delivery. God bless.
