Getting out of debt … with a plan

rp_dollar-941246_640-300x225.jpgHey everyone! Today I have a guest post for the third week of my debt payoff series (the other two posts were How I eliminated my debt in less than 1 year and How We Handled $32,000 in Student Loans). I asked readers and friends to submit guest posts regarding anything relating to their debt. Enjoy! If you would like to participate, please e-mail me at senseofcents@gmail.com.

Today’s post is about a reader’s debt and her plan to eliminate them. Also, don’t forget to read about my wonderful $38,000 student loan plan and what I’m doing to aggressively get rid of them.

It’s twice as hard getting out of debt without a plan than with one. So do yourself a favour and have a plan!

  1. List all of your debts
  2. Prioritize your debts (whether you want to tackle the highest interest rate first or lowest balance first, its up to you)
  3. Set your “Debt Free Date” and find out what your payment(s) would be
  4. Find a way to fit this into your budget (or you may have to adjust your date). You may have to make more money in order to do this if you are seriously committed to this date.
  5. Pay off your debt!

A lot of people just pay what they can afford to on their debt without ever knowing when it will be paid off (and if you’re only making the minimum payment it could be 10 years or more!) talk about discouraging! If you plan for particular day to be debt free you are more likely to work harder to get your debt paid off by that date.

How can you find out when you will be debt free? You can use an online calculator there’s a few available that can be found with a quick search.

For myself, I have just over $6K in debt at this moment and I would like to be debt free by the end of the year (11 months). According to the calculator I used it would take me $596.34 per month to pay off my debt in 11 months.

Methods

The online calculator I used calculated the payments to each card based on the avalanche method (highest interest rate first) and the minimum payment on the other balance(s). Whether you choose the avalanche or snowball (lowest balance method), be sure to make at least the minimum payment(s) on the debt that you’re not focusing on first (remember the list of priority in step 2) so that your credit history doesn’t take a beating.

Look at your budget

You then look at your budget and see if that amount works in your current budget. However, a word of caution … if you are looking to see if you have that amount left over in your budget every month, you may find that you don’t have that amount. That doesn’t mean it cannot be done.

What I do is that I take my income and subtract my fixed expenses, savings, and debt repayment BEFORE I look to see what’s left over to spend. I’m leaving myself about $300 a paycheque for my variable spending. That’s what’s left over after I take off all of my above expenditures. That may be a very low number for a lot of you. You have to look at your individual spending, BUT, I again caution you that if you don’t even try to live on less, you may never get out of debt or once you are out you will go back in. If you never control your spending and have a plan you may always stay in debt.

Here’s a really simplistic example: $2500 income – $1,000 (fixed expenses rent and bills) – $250 savings – $596.34 (debt repayment) = $653.66 left over for your variable costs per month. If you know 100% that this amount is not doable, then you will probably need to adjust your debt free date. Although, the longer you prolong debt repayment, the more likely you will be a victim of debt fatigue and will go on a spending spree. So, keep the date tight.

You can also make more money, but if the debt repayment amount is solely or mostly dependant on this extra income, you may still need to do some adjustments. Most of the time, extra money is variable and can change from month to month. I’m not saying not to make extra money if you can, it will just mean that your date free date can be sooner than you had originally anticipated, and that would be a welcome bonus indeed.

Getting out of debt isn’t easy, I’m still working on it, but with a plan, hard work and dedication, you too can have your debt free day!

Morgaine @ Morgaine and Money.  I’m 32 years old, been blogging about personal finance since 2010 (with some hiatuses) as inspired by Gail Vaz-Oxlade and other pf bloggers to get out of debt and transform myself from spender to saver. Currently turning my $21K of debt into $21K of savings and hoping to buy a house in the near future. Follow me at http://morgaineandmoney.blogspot.com/ and on twitter @morgainemoney

What is your plan to get out of debt? What is your monthly amount that you are paying towards debt?

#Tag: Getting to Know the “Person” Behind the Personal Finance Blog

Me jumping off a rock in Hawaii. #Tag: Getting to Know the “Person” Behind the Personal Finance Blog Hey everyone! To the left you can see yet another one of my pictures of me from far away. I like to tease you all with these. I mean, come on, I am still semi-anonymous! At some point though I will run out of far away pictures and be forced to share an up-close picture with you all.

Girl Meets Debt made a fun questionnaire so that everyone could get to know each other a little better. Cait, Tonya, and Krystal all took part and now of course I want to take part.

I know, I know, I talk about myself a ton on my blog. Oh well, it’s my blog and I’ll blog about whatever my heart desires. I always enjoy reading personal posts on blogs so I am hoping you all enjoy this. I tag all of you!

I haven’t really talked a whole lot about my blog and why I started it, so hopefully you learn something interesting today. So many things have changed since the day I started my blog back in August of 2011. When I go back and read those posts from before, I can’t help but laugh. My writing style and blog have changed tremendously, and so have I.

1) How did you come up with your blog name?

I don’t even remember how I came up with it. I will say that I kind of regret it and wish I came up with something fun and interesting, and possibly not so long!  I had a ton of ideas but everything seemed taken. Have you ever had name regret? Or am I alone on this?

2) Which bloggers inspired you when you first started writing?

I actually started by reading DailyWorth. I saw the DailyWorth founder in a magazine (I think it was Cosmo) and looked into the website. I then somehow got hooked on pf blogs and websites when before I barely ever even looked. I found a ton of blogs by looking at the comments on there and it was a long chain effect. Before I knew it I started reading blogs like The Happy Homeowner, Budgeting in the Fun Stuff, Judy’s blog and others and became hooked! These 3 blogs all made me want to continue blogging shortly after I started. What blogs motivated you to blog? Tell me!

I will also say that it was Newlyweds on a Budget who made me look into finding additional income streams. She was making money online from her blog, doing mystery shops, writing for other blogs and so on. She was a huge inspiration and one day I reached out and e-mail her and asked for help with it all.  I then of course was also obsessed with Crystal’s blog (BITFS) and everything she was doing. I was HOOKED on blogs that talked about a realistic way to make extra income.

3) Why write about finance?

I actually love writing about finance. I don’t think I’d say I’m strictly a finance blogger, mainly because I try and include everything about my life – family, wedding, friends, travel, and so on. Writing about finance is nice though because I do have a lot of financial goals and it seems easy to talk about.

I also knew that I wanted to be different. I read TONS of lifestyle and fashion blogs, and so many of them were asking me questions about finance. It is nice that people actually ask ME questions 🙂

4a) What do you enjoy most about blogging?

Blogging is great because of the community that it brings. I get so many great emails from readers and other bloggers everyday and it’s just crazy to think about. I started my blog in August of 2011, and before that I never even ONCE thought about blogging or starting a blog. I feel like because of my blog I am able to talk to tons of awesome people every single day, and I have made a lot of new friends. I will say that I am super excited for FinCon13, as it’s my first blog conference EVER.

If it wasn’t for my blog, I don’t think I would be anywhere near where I am today. I most likely would not have even ever thought about extra income, let alone making as much money in extra income as I am now. I also feel like I have improved in nearly every aspect of my life, and I attribute a lot of it to my blog. Having talked to so many awesome people through my blog, I just know that it offers such a great support system.

4b) What do you enjoy least about blogging?

I don’t know if there’s anything that I don’t like. I would say the occasional mean e-mail or mean comment is never great, but I have been doing a lot better with just ignoring things that aren’t true.

5) What’s the most helpful piece of advice you have learned from reading other PF blogs?

Ah! This is such a hard question. There are SO many things that I would say have been helpful. Spend less money than you earn, diversify your income, and make EXTRA INCOME! Also, don’t feel like you constantly need to keep up with the Joneses. Constantly comparing yourself gets you nowhere.

6) In terms of finance, what is your main focus at the moment?

Right now I’m really working on getting rid of all of my student loan debt. Then after that it’ll be saving as much money as we can for my new business venture and also for the down payment on our next house.

7) If you could give your younger self financial advice, what would it be?

There are so many things that I would tell my younger self: Don’t buy so many clothes! You don’t need that. That shirt you are about to buy looks just like the shirt you bought yesterday and the day before. Also, please pay off some of your student loan debt. You have the money to pay it off but instead you don’t.

In all honestly though, I am happy with the way everything in my life has turned out. Yes, at times things felt extremely rocky and scary, but everything that has happened has just made me that more of an awesome person.

8) Who in your real life knows about your blog?

Some people know that I blog (W, my sister, W’s family and 3 friends). No one besides my sister and W know the actual name though. Luckily they don’t read it though!

9) Does your real job have anything to do with finance or money?

I work in the finance industry, but it has nothing to do with personal finance. I know a lot of you want me to blog about my job but not many people do it so I feel like it would just be too easy to search me, and for other people to realize that this is my blog!

10) What’s the first thing you would do if you won a million dollars?

I would pay off my student loans, sell my current house and buy a new and affordable one, travel a tiny bit and save the rest. And lets be honest, I would of course buy some splurge worthy items. I don’t have debt anymore in this scenario, so I think I’m doing pretty well in this dream world.

Do you have any questions for me? Ask below!

Also, I tag ALL of you! Either run and make your own posts or answer some of the questions in the comments below.

$1,121 in Extra Income and Life Updates

My French Bulldog in the snowHappy Monday everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend. Definitely a packed weekend that went by too quickly.

Our good friends got married over the weekend and we spent a lot of time with good friends. It was a pretty cheap weekend also which is always nice!

We looked at more houses online but didn’t really see anything that we like still. Luckily we’re not 100% ready to buy right now so I’m glad we don’t like anything!

I don’t know if any of you have even noticed, but I deactivated my blog’s Pinterest profile a couple of days ago. Lets just say that I had a mini freakout.  The other day I noticed that I was replying to my friends pins on Pinterest under my blog profile (and not my personal). Some of my friends know I blog, but none know the name Making Sense of Cents. However, this friend is someone who I am very close to and I haven’t told her that I blog at all. So of course I naturally freaked out because my blog link is in my blog’s Pinterest profile. I plan on reactivating it this week, but I’m just hoping she doesn’t find it (I did delete all the comments that I left her). What a close call! As you can tell, I’m still not fully ready to have my friends read my blog. It’s still all very personal! Sometimes I do wish I wasn’t such an anonymous blogger.

Spending

We did do some spending this weekend but not a whole lot. I spent $70 at the store and bought some clothes, but I plan on returning some of it as I didn’t like it anymore after I tried them them on when I got home.

We also did buy a curl bar and weights for it, which cost $86. We had $30 in rewards thankfully or our total would have been more than $100. Still a lot, I can’t believe how expensive fitness equipment are.

Extra Income

Extra Income (does not include salary from our jobs)

I received approximately $1,121 in payments in the past week. I do think this last week of the month will go out with a bang as I usually get paid in the last week for several assignments.

Affiliate income is going really great and I’m glad I started working on this. I do have bigger plans for this and hope to see this area of my extra income to continually increase. A couple of days ago some of you had your Page Rank decreased, and this only gives me more motivation. How have you been doing with your affiliate income? Are you trying to grow this?

My friend came in town and we talked about our future business plan. We are doing some major research first and luckily with the job I currently have, I research companies and industries all day long and can get this done pretty quickly since I know where to look for reliable resources (and have access to all of these resources). She did mention a website that I’ve never heard of called Kickstarter. Have any of you ever used it? Apparently from what I remember is that you can fundraise money for your future business. Nevermind, I thought it was a something similar to peer to peer lending for entrepreneurs.

Food

We have a meal plan this week! I found some really tasty looking recipes and am excited for our meals for this week. I bought enough groceries for the next two weeks and I’m pretty excited about this. Our fridge and pantry are SO packed and I hope we actually eat nearly all of this instead of letting things go to waste like usually.

We have been doing really good with eating in. We went out to eat this past weekend (but not during the week) and ate and drank pretty cheaply. How are you doing with your food budget?! If you have any tasty looking recipes from last week, please share your blog post in the comments so that I can add it to my meal plan for future weeks 🙂

  • Monday: Burgers and fries
  • Tuesday: Chicken and Spinach Taquitos
  • Wednesday: Penne with Pesto Cream Sauce and Chicken
  • Thursday: Breakfast for dinner with Banana Pancakes
  • Friday: Lemon-Ricotta Pasta with Scallops
  • Saturday: Out to eat
  • Sunday: Jalapeno Popper Chicken

Wedding

I haven’t made any new wedding plans recently. There are just so many other things going on that I’m just not worried about the wedding. I’d rather save the planning for when I have time to have fun with it and am actually awake! Also, a lot of people have asked (yes, I actually get e-mails about this) why we are waiting so long to get married. Honestly, as I’ve said before, getting married wouldn’t change anything for us (except the legal aspect), as we are already completely open about everything and committed. However, I AM excited to plan a fun party where I get to have fun with all of the people that I love. I have been considered a part of W’s family since day 1 and love being able to be a part of such a wonderful family.

Some of you have asked that we share our engagement photos, and trust me I will. So sometime in May look out for those pictures because those will be good 🙂

Being healthy

This is probably the best category in my weekly blog posts. I’ve been doing pretty good with this. Having the treadmill in our basement is nice and I try to squeeze a mile in whenever I have some time to spare (such as between writing blog posts, making dinner, etc), along with designating time after work every now and then.

We also bought a lot of fruits and vegetables last night and I don’t think we bought any snacks. We are really wanting to be more healthy. I have a goal to lose 5 pounds but also to get more toned all over. I really need to start a workout plan and a more clean food plan.

Have you been doing well with your extra income, spending and being healthy?

Happy Saturday everyone! If you were lucky/unlucky enough to be hit by the snowstorm, then this could possibly be the third day of your long, unexpected weekend. I had Thursday off, but the roads were fine where I live so I went to work on Friday.

I have a full weekend. Yesterday, our close friends got married and had a lunch reception (which we missed because the wedding was planned last second). After both W and I got out of work we went out to celebrate. The celebrations continue tonight as well. I’m SUPER excited to go out with a big group because feels like it’s been forever (it actually hasn’t but oh well). We plan on giving them their gift today and I need to put that together still. Thanks everyone for your suggestions on Twitter yesterday 🙂

However, before that, me and my friend are having a little business meeting to talk about the business that we plan on opening soon. I can’t wait until I can officially tell everyone what this new business is. Some of you already know since you guessed correctly last week 🙂 Hopefully it goes well!

Buying a Home as a Minimalist

Last Updated: July 29, 2019 BY Jordann - 27 Comments

As a minimalist, I always want to have less. Less stuff, less space, less bills, less, well, everything. Buying a home as a minimalist is also something I think about.

Generally speaking, this has served me well in the past. I have fewer clothes, which means less to replace, wash, etc. I have less space, which means less to furnish, clean, and repair. Most of the time, living with less makes me happier. There’s only one place where being a minimalist is really throwing me off, and that’s with home buying.

Now, I’m not ready to buy a house just yet. I still have a lot of debt, and I won’t be ready to take on the commitment of a mortgage until that’s paid off and I’ve amassed a sizeable downpayment. That said, I want to be a home owner some day. I want to have my own backyard, my own little bit of space that I can change or remodel and do whatever I want to.

The only problem is deciding how much space I need.

Right now, as a couple of DINKs (Dual Income No Kids) with a dog, my fiance and I need relatively little space. We used to do just fine in a studio apartment (we live in a  400 sq. ft. house), but since the addition of the dog, we’ve moved to a 400 sq. ft. house with a backyard. At the moment, this size living space suits us perfectly, and it’ll probably continue to suit us for a long time. [Read more…]

How We Handled $32,000 in Student Loans

Last Updated: August 30, 2019 BY Michelle Schroeder-Gardner - 37 Comments

Hey everyone! Today I have a guest post to mark off the second week in my debt payoff series. I asked readers and friends to submit guest posts regarding anything relating to their debt. Enjoy! If you would like to participate, please e-mail me at senseofcents@gmail.com. Today’s post is about a reader’s student loans. Read further if you would like to read about my wonderful $38,000 student loan plan.

Almost eleven years ago I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and $15K in debt.

I was lucky to only have this much in loans as my parents for some and I had paid cash for two years myself by working summers in high school.

My husband had an additional $12K that he owed and when we married two years later we combined it.

Over the course of 6 years we made it a priority to pay these off. Every year when we got our tax money back we paid down on these loans. We started with the biggest one first (mine) and then used the money we saved on not having to pay mine and doubled down on paying his. [Read more…]

Blogger or WordPress – Tips on How to Move

Blogger or WordPress - Tips on How to MoveAfter my How to Start a Blog on WordPress post (this post included tips on how to get your domain, self-hosting, etc. and reasons for why you should pay for blog hosting), I received several e-mails on how to switch from Blogger to WordPress, questions about the whole migration process, whether a person should choose Blogger or WordPress, and so on.

A lot of you asked me what is better: Blogger (Blogspot) or WordPress? I’ve also been asked “What will happen if I move my Blogspot blog to self-hosting?”

Let me say that I am definitely no expert in this area and just fiddled around with it just so that I could try and help you guys.

This is a very basic set of instructions. If you don’t have the time to sit down and do this, please, please just pay someone to migrate your blog from Blogger to WordPress for you.

Some of the tips in this blog post will be a repeat of the How to Start a WordPress Blog post, as I’m trying to help each individual person instead of having someone having to flip back and forth between the two blog posts for the basics.

If you sign up for Bluehost through my link and purchase at least 12 months of blog hosting, then you will get your domain for FREE plus receive discounted pricing! [Read more…]
