June Goals and Life Update - 4 Days Until the WeddingHello everyone and happy June! May was a good month for me. I hope it was for all of you as well.

In May, I had my bachelorette party in Vegas, and Wes also had his bachelor party in Vegas, but we didn’t go on the same days. We also took a ton of fun bike rides and finished up a lot of wedding to-dos on our wedding list.

It is now June, which means that it’s probably the craziest month of my life.

Our wedding is just a few days away (June 7th), and I must be a crazy person for planning an over 200 person outdoor wedding on private property all by myself.  WHAT WAS I THINKING?

Oh well, I’m sure it will be a great time. I can’t wait! I’m hoping the weather will be great for us, please keep your fingers crossed. [Read more…]

8 DAYS Until The Wedding and Weekly UpdateHello everyone! I hope all of you had a great week.

This past week has been pretty crazy for me since our wedding is next week. I know, I know, you are probably so sick and tired of me talking about the wedding! There is still so much to do and the wedding is next Saturday…

I don’t think I did anything this week except for things related to freelancing or the wedding. Haha, I can’t wait for the wedding to come so that I can start enjoying other parts of my life!

We did go for a nice bike ride yesterday though. We rode 18.10 miles and it was fun, but super tiring.

Two WEEKS Until the Wedding and Weekly Update

Our wedding will happen right here in two weeks!

Hello! I hope all of you had a great week.

It was a good one for me, even if it was a little uneventful. We ran a lot of wedding errands this week and we also did some Spring cleaning.

We have family staying with us the week of our wedding, so we cleaned out the guest room (it’s been my “wedding room” for the past few months), and we now have over 20 LARGE boxes hanging out around our home of wedding stuff that I have bought but left in the shipping boxes.

I can’t believe how quickly all of this stuff added up!

Wednesday was also my birthday! I am finally 25 and still feeling young 🙂

We went to a BBQ place for lunch and then ate at my favorite Mexican restaurant for dinner. I wanted sushi originally but after being in the car for around 4 hours on my birthday running errands, I changed my mind because my favorite sushi place is around 30 minutes away and it just wasn’t worth it to be in the car any longer! BBQ and Mexican are just as tasty though.

Too Much Spending and Weekly Update

Last Updated: December 20, 2015 BY Michelle Schroeder-Gardner - 33 Comments

May has been a great month so far, except for this cough that I just can’t seem to get over.

Anyway, I had my bachelorette party this month and Wes had his bachelor party. Mine was a lot of fun and I’m sure his was as well.

Even though we both had a lot of fun, we are both happy to be home. I missed my pups a lot!

Spending

This past week has been a doozy for us. There has been so much spending so far in May that I kind of just want to run away from life! Haha just kidding… Kind of!

I went to Vegas last week, and Wes got from Vegas early this morning. We also bought clothes for both of our trips and had some wedding spending this month so far as well. It’s just a big month of spending for us, and it doesn’t plan on stopping until mid-June unfortunately.

Business Income

May has been a good month for income so far. I did take around 5 days off last week, but I’ve been spending the last few days catching up on everything. I’m not sure if May will be one of my strongest months, but it will be up there.

If anyone needs any help, check out my Hire Me page and let me know what services you are interested in.

Being healthy

Being healthy has been non-existant lately. Lets move on to the next category… 🙂

Wedding Planning

Our wedding is 3 weeks away. Isn’t that crazy?

Two things…

1. We are having a slight problem with getting the RSVPs back. We addressed and stamped them, yet we have only received around 40 RSVPs back (as of this morning), and we are still waiting on around 60 of them. The deadline is tomorrow so I guess I have a lot of phone calls to make in the next few days.

2. Also, I brought my wedding dress to an alterations place back in February. As of two days ago, I still hadn’t received a phone call from them even though they said they would call me in March about my wedding dress. I called the other day and it turns out they haven’t even started it yet, and they don’t plan on starting it until the day before my wedding. That is FREAKING NUTS, right?

I can’t be the only one whose jaw hit the ground, right? The day BEFORE my wedding and THEN it will be started?

I plan on finding another place to do it, but until then I don’t want to tell them because I don’t want them to ruin my dress because they get mad at me or something. Yup, I am that paranoid, but I know that happens…

Oh yeah, and we still haven’t planned our honeymoon. That’s one thing I am really looking forward to so I need to start thinking!

Las Vegas Recap: My Most Frugal Trip Ever

Las Vegas Recap- My Most Frugal Trip Ever9

We spent most of our time at the pool, and it’s where we probably had the most fun. I’m in the white swimsuit 🙂

I’ve been to Las Vegas a few times now.

I’ve done three girls’ trips there in the past few years with my friends, and I also went a few times when I was under 21 with my family.

One thing that I was surprised by this time around was the weather. It was a cold 60 degrees each day, which is a huge difference from the 90 degree and extremely humid days that St. Louis has been experiencing.

Las Vegas was a lot of fun. Me and 6 of my friends (and one girl who now lives in Las Vegas met up with us as well) went to Vegas for my bachelorette party. We left at around 11 a.m. on Wednesday and came back at around 6 p.m. on Saturday.

I’ve gone to Vegas with this same group of friends three times now. It was my sister’s first time though, and it was also right after her 21st birthday. She had a blast and I know she’s already waiting to go back!

Did I work at all?

One of my goals on this trip was to put my laptop away and actually enjoy myself on a vacation. I am happy to say that for the most part, I actually did not work. I worked entirely from my cell phone and didn’t even bring my laptop. This meant that all I really did was handle urgent emails and make sure that nothing insane would happen while I was gone for 4 days. I don’t think I worked much though. I maybe sent out 10 emails while I was gone.

It was a little hard to completely separate myself from work, but it was also nice at the same time.

Las Vegas total cost.

Even though it was my bachelorette party, I’m always looking to save money when on vacation. Why spend money when it takes just minutes to save hundreds of dollars?

The total cost for this vacation for me was less than $300.

I believe my friends spent right around $500 each, which is a cheap budget vacation for all of us! It was a little more expensive for them because they paid for some of the costs for me (such as hotel and a Vegas show) since it was my bachelorette party – and we have always covered the costs for bachelorettes at past bachelorette parties. However, $500 total for Vegas including airfare, the hotel, food, etc. is not a bad deal!

Hotel in Las Vegas.

We stayed at the Flamingo. No, it’s not one of the most glamorous hotels, but it’s right in the middle of The Strip, the rooms are updated, and the pool is one of the best on The Strip. People actually leave their nice hotel pools on The Strip and pay to go to Flamingo’s pool, so there must be a reason for that!

We had two hotel rooms, since there were 7 of us. The 8th girl lived nearby and went home since she had work during the week.

We stayed at the Flamingo in 2012 when we all last went to Vegas, and we loved it last time so we booked it again this time. I believe the total cost was $580 (including all taxes, resort fees, etc.) for all 7 of us in 2 adjoining rooms for 4 days/3 nights.

I also brought my Total Rewards card and we were upgraded to a Strip View for free and received early check in for free as well. Even though the hotel wasn’t in my name, the super nice worker said that we could use it anyways because they were not strict about that policy.

Definitely sign up for your Total Rewards card before you go to Vegas. I believe it saves you 10% at many of the hotel gift shops, it allows you to skip the checkin line at many of the hotels, and you also get to waive the early check in fee (which is $30 per room!).

Total for the hotel: $0. It was $580, but since I was the bachelorette my friends would not let me pay. $580 split among the 6 of them though was still a steal!

Transportation to/in Las Vegas.

We all live in the St. Louis area, so taking a plane to Las Vegas was our best bet. Luckily, none of us had to pay a lot. I earned enough points through Southwest to get free/cheap airfare for 5 of us. Read How I Plan on Getting $2,500 in Airfare to Las Vegas for CHEAP.

Then, one of my friends had buddy passes through Southwest which meant that two of the girls also got to fly for free.

Roundtrip airfare from STL to Las Vegas tends to run around $400, and I got it for a very cheap price for all of us. I had around 84,000 rewards points for multiple roundtrip tickets.

We also took several taxis for our trip. We took the taxi from the airport to the hotel and back again when we departed. Then, each night we went out and took taxis from there and back so that we wouldn’t kill ourselves walking in our heels. The taxis weren’t that bad though. I think I spent around $50 in taxis altogether.

Total for gas and transportation: $50. I believe they each paid around $150 in transportation though since they all split the cost of the 7th plane ticket.

Food/drinks/miscellaneous in Las Vegas.

We didn’t spend a ton on food when we were in Las Vegas. Since we’ve all already been so many times, we were a little bit more lazy since we’ve already tried a lot of the restaurants there. This time, we mainly wanted it to be more relaxing and save time so that we could lay out by the pool each day.

We went to Walgreens on the Strip when we first got there. We all stocked up on drinks (and alcohol), snacks, and food (bagels, peanut butter, sandwich stuff, etc.) for the whole trip. This way we didn’t need to get breakfast each morning since we would all be too tired anyways.

For lunch each day, we ate at the pool. Surprisingly, the pool’s food was very good and surprisingly cheaper than we thought. I bought chicken tacos and tater tots (LOL, I know) for $12.

For dinner we tried a different place each night. With drinks included, I think I spent around $30 each night on dinner, which isn’t bad at all.

Drinks were super cheap for us. Luckily all the promoters and clubs want big groups of bachelorette parties, so we were able to get open bar and free tables each night. It’s nice to be a girl! We went to Surrender one night, and Tao the next night. The third night we had a free table as well but we decided to roam the Strip, people watch and drink instead. It was a lot of fun!

We also went to Thunder From Down Under, which is actually our FOURTH time going. I know, I know, we are a sad bunch of girls 🙂 Since it was my bachelorette party, they all split the cost of my ticket, which was very nice!

Total for food, drinks and miscellaneous expenses: $150. This would have been a little higher, but my sister was adamant about paying for some of my meals. Love you Lexy! For the others, they probably spent around $225 each (because of the Thunder From Down Under tickets).

Have you ever been to Las Vegas?

What’s your next planned trip? What was your cheapest vacation ever?

Life Is Great And Weekly Update

Life Is Great And Weekly UpdateHello everyone! I hope all of you are having a great April so far. This month has been really great so far. I’m not sure what it is…

The weather is great, the business is going very well, I’ve been getting outside a lot, my family is great and my friends are awesome.

I just have so many things to be thankful for right now.

Also, my bridal shower was last weekend! My bridesmaids threw a great bridal shower that was a lot of fun and had a lot of yummy food. Thanks again guys! I know you guys will read this 🙂 We are also going to Las Vegas in less than two weeks and it will be amazing!

The picture to the right is Wes’s family’s property, and where we will be having our wedding. It’s super pretty and we’ve been spending a lot of time there lately since we are trying to plan everything related to our wedding right now.

Spending

The past two weeks have been fairly cheap for us. We have had a lot of wedding expenses (I talk about those below), but those have all been budgeted in for quite some time.

We did buy some more clothing this week, which kind of stinks since I was really hoping that we would stop spending so much money in this category!

Business Income

April has been a crazy month for business income. I’m not really sure where I am in regards to income, but I feel like the amount of work definitely exceeds past months. I guess we will see in my next income report 🙂

Right now, my main goal is to really work on getting ahead with my work. I’m trying to get around one month to two months ahead of schedule by writing several articles ahead of time, but that can sometimes be really hard.

Some weeks I write over 20 articles, which can then really add up quickly if I’m trying to get weeks or months ahead of schedule.

If anyone needs any help, check out my Hire Me page and let me know what services you are interested in.

Being healthy

I have been doing very well with being more healthy. I walked/ran a total of around 15 miles this week (did 10 miles on a trail with Wes and one of our dogs), rode my bike over 10 miles, and I also did a few different workout DVDs a few days this week.

The weather has been great this week so that really helped.

Wedding Planning

The wedding is just a little over one month away. I can’t believe it’s so close, I still have so much more to plan!

Life Is Great And Weekly Update

Our ceremony will be right next to this tree 🙂

We finally also sent out our wedding invitations last week. We received around 20% of them back so far as well. It’s really exciting getting them each day. Almost like it’s a present!

We didn’t have any luck finding a backup location. No one returned my phone calls or emails. And, if they did return a phone call or email, they were extremely rude and accused me of trying to ruin their venue (I really don’t know how these people have jobs). I guess I’m really just going to hope that there won’t be a monsoon on the wedding day.

The last big thing that I have been working on was finding a bartender, and I actually found one last week. I paid the deposit last night. Instead of supplying the alcohol ourselves and hiring a bartender separately, we found a company that will do it all. The cost is $2,000 for 200 people for 5 hours with all-inclusive drinks, which I think is reasonable. What do you think?

We could have saved a little bit of money by supplying the alcohol ourselves, but we get to save a lot of hassle doing it this way.

How To Save Money By Bartering Services

Last Updated: April 7, 2021 BY Michelle Schroeder-Gardner - 48 Comments

Find out how to save money by bartering services. This is a great list!In March, I published the article Wedding Update – Up To $20,000. In it, I mentioned that we were able to save over $6,000 in wedding expenses by bartering, exchanging services, and discounts.

Weddings are expensive, and since the very beginning I knew that I didn’t want to spend anywhere near the national average of $26,000 on our wedding.

That is just a crazy amount of money, especially since we are paying for it all (and I am rather cheap).

Even though we are at around $14,000 in costs that we have paid, it is nice to know that we are going to have a great wedding on a great budget.

I forgot to also mention that we are saving around $3,000 to $4,000 in venue fees since we don’t need to pay for our venue as well (similar venues that we looked at were that price). So, in total we are saving over $10,000 on our wedding!

The main way that I was able to save so much on our wedding is because I tried to barter for services and products as much as I could. There are negatives to bartering (such as paying taxes on the amount received), but for the most part it is a great thing. [Read more…]
