How I’ve Traveled Full Time For 20 Years (And Make/Save Money)

Today, I have a great guest post to share from Patrick Schulte from Bumfuzzle. Patrick quit his job around 20 years ago and has been traveling full-time ever since. He and his wife have circumnavigated the world by boat, and have also driven from Alaska to Argentina as well as Europe in a 1958 VW van. Here is how they made it happen. Enjoy!How I've Traveled Full Time For 20 Years

Life was much simpler when I was content with living the American Dream.

I walked to work from my downtown Chicago condo, traded commodities for a few hours, came home, walked up the street to pick my wife up from her job, walked to a restaurant, walked home, watched tv, went to bed. On the weekends we might take in a Blackhawks game.

That was life.

Relaxing, easy, and comfortable.

We had plenty of money, a nice home, a convertible, didn’t want for anything, and we were still in our twenties.

We should have considered ourselves lucky, had a baby, and moved to the suburbs. That would have been the appropriate next step. Throw in a white picket fence and we would have completed the package.

Instead, within just a few months, we were floating at anchor on a 35’ catamaran in the Bahamas.

It was the kind of dramatic left turn that makes the car’s passenger door fly open in the movies. [Read more…]

Sailing SV Delos – Living A Beautiful Life On The Sea

Sailing SV Delos is what many people dream of – sailing around the world to exotic destinations in a beautiful boat with a super fun group of people, who all happen to be friendly and gorgeous. They go on amazing adventures, and they even brew moonshine on their boat. What more could you ask for?

In my Extraordinary Series here on Making Sense of Cents, I like to feature people who are doing things a little differently. So, I knew that interviewing SV Delos should be next!

As you may know, me and my husband (and our two dogs) also live on a sailboat. So, getting the opportunity to interview SV Delos was something I was really excited about doing!

SV Delos

Before our interview, let me give you a little backstory on the sailing vessel Delos and the crew.

It all started in May of 2008 when Brian Trautman bought SV Delos.

Brian had been sailing around the lakes of Seattle for several years, but had never really thought about living on a sailboat, much less sailing around the world. Until one day when he found a book in the library that explained how to cross the ocean on your own boat. It was an eye-opening moment for Brian.

He spent the next four years dreaming and planning for the first epic trip – sailing to New Zealand. He sold nearly everything, and bought SV Delos in May of 2008. [Read more…]

Welcome To Paradise – We’re Living On A Sailboat!

We're living on a sailboat, SV Paradise! We bought a Lagoon 42 catamaran and switched from RVing to becoming liveaboards and eventually cruisers. Sailboat living is amazing! #livingonasailboat #sailboat #lagoon42 #liveaboardIt’s official, we’re now living on a sailboat!

To be specific, it’s a Lagoon 42 catamaran that we named Paradise.

Now, we are still very new to this lifestyle, but we are very excited!

We’ve wanted to move onto a boat for a while. In fact, we wanted to live on a sailboat before we even started RVing.

Our switch from RV life to living on sailboat started earlier this year, when we made the journey from Tucson, Arizona (where we were wintering in our RV) to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. We started looking at sailboats online, both on the west coast and east coast, but Florida just had so many more options.

We pulled up the RV jacks and made the long trek to Florida. Along the way, we stopped in multiple places, sort of a last RV trip hurrah to see our friends and family that live all over the U.S. [Read more…]

From Backpacker Working For $3 An Hour To Sailor With A Digital BusinessMy monthly Extraordinary Lives series is something that I’m really enjoying doing. First up was JP Livingston, who retired with a net worth over $2,000,000 at the age of 28. Today’s interview is with Kach Howe. She has been to over 100 countries and all 7 continents. She is now sailing the Caribbean with her husband and cat.

She’s not retired, though – she’s still working!

In this interview, you’ll learn:

  • How she has been traveling for 5 years and has traveled to 100 countries;
  • How she now lives on a 1971 Finnrose 37 sailboat;
  • How she affords to travel;
  • How they taught English in Peru for $3 an hour and how that motivated her to find ways to make more money;
  • How much sailing costs them.

And more! This interview is packed full of valuable information! [Read more…]

The Digital Nomad Lifestyle – A Day In The Life

digital nomad lifestyle

Are you wondering what is the digital nomad lifestyle? Looking to learn more about the nomadic lifestyle? Here’s how I do it.

“What do you do all day?”

I am regularly asked what my average day is like. It’s always such a difficult question to answer, as there is no routine day for me. If you know me at all, then you know that I pretty much hate schedules, haha.

My hatred of schedules is probably one of the main reasons for why I love living the digital nomad lifestyle.

Telling people that I work online and travel is always an interesting conversation. Telling people “I’m a blogger” just leads to so many questions, which I completely understand. But, when they find out that I’m a full-time traveler too, they get even more confused!

Now, blogging is a lot of work. I may not work a ton everyday, but there are many days when I’ll work 16 hours a day. There is almost always something that needs to be done when it comes to my blogging business, and I have a whole long list of things that I want to do when I have more time. [Read more…]
