Selling your car is not rocket science, but there are some steps you can take to sell your car like a pro. Following these steps will help you get more money for car and are extremely easy to follow. So, with that in mind, here is a quick list on how to sell your car like a pro.
Step 1: Think like a Customer
This might sound counterintuitive, but at the first step you want to ask, ‘who wants to buy my car?’. This will give you a starting point by defining who potential buyers will be. From there you can figure out what information they will need. By getting all this information together beforehand you will be in position to answer a prospective buyer’s questions quickly and effectively.
One way to do this is to get the vehicle history report for your car. This will list your car’s previous owners and any major service issues. While a Carfax report is expensive, and for the most part redundant, a good alternative is the NMVTIS. This stands for National Motor Vehicle Title Information System and is run by the government, as such the data in the report includes check of databases from insurance companies, junkyards, and state DMVs.
Step 2: The Right Price
Car dealers know how to price cars. A big part of this is by knowing the sales price of similar cars in the area. This can come from internal information or other sales databases. While this might sound like insider information, the reality is that you can take the same approach to setting the right price for your car.
To do so, start looking at three or four similar (i.e. model, year, and mileage) cars currently for sale in your area. Make note of the mileage, upgrades, and other details, then you will want to discount the cost of the upgrades. Once you have done this you can calculate the average price of the cars you selected. This will give you a starting point for your car but you’re not done yet.
The next step is to add half the cost of any upgrades you have made to your car. The result will be the price at which you are willing to sell your car for. However, you are not done yet. The final step is to add the full price of the upgrades you have made to you care. This will give you the list price for your – the price you will use in advertisements. Following this method gives you the right price for your car every time.
Step 3: Inspect It
Another thing the pros do, is they get the cars they are selling checked out and the get a report of the results. This is called an inspection report and it will list out the car’s current condition and any required repairs.
Depending on the report, you might decide to do some of the repairs before selling your car or you might decide to list it ‘as is’. Either way, the inspection report not only gives a potential buyer a third-party evaluation of your car, it also helps to protect you against your state’s lemon laws.
Step 4: Pictures Matter
Pros know that fuzzy, dimly lit photos don’t help to sell a car – they make it harder. One key to great pictures includes taking a minimum of five pictures from each angle – this way you can choose the best. Also, remember to highlight the key features which make your car special. This could include custom rims or that entertainment system.
If you are using natural lighting, then the best time to take your pictures is about one hour after sunrise. In addition, don’t use your cell phone, use a high-quality camera to take clear pictures of your car’s true condition. If your car has a few dents, show them. The pros understand you can only hide for so long.
Step 5: Which Sites Have the Most Traffic
The pros know their area and they know which sites have the most traffic. In addition, they don’t pay for a listing, unless they really need to. As such, you want to use the free listing service as often as possible.
They also know that great pictures and an easy-to-read listings peak interest. The title of your listing should include the basics, such as year, make, and model. While the first paragraph should list the specifics of your car. Then you want to list the terms clearly and succinctly. Don’t over complicate it and you will find your ad getting the most traffic.
Step 6: Be Prepared
The pros know which questions they will be asked and they have the answers already prepared. It doesn’t matter if it is email or by text message, create some templates to answer your questions without having to type your answers every time.
Step 7: Let’s Make a Deal
Finally, be prepared to deal. Selling your car means that you need to sell it, don’t get too fixated on a price. Look to get the deal done as fast as possible for the most money possible. This is how the pros sell cars.
