Hello everyone! Today’s post is just a short one due to the holiday. On Wednesday, I will have a new post for you to enjoy.
I hope all of you had a fun weekend and I hope it’s a great Monday for you too. For those of you here in the United States, it’s Memorial Day.
Last year, I published an infographic from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs that I recommend you check out if you didn’t see it last year. I want to thank everyone who has served and is currently serving in the military. If it weren’t for all of you, I don’t know where I would be. I know I mainly talk about personal finance here on my blog, but please remember the true meaning of Memorial Day.
While last year’s Memorial Day post was more about the real meaning of Memorial Day, today will be more light and I wanted to include the infographic below about summer spending (no, this is not sponsored – I found the infographic myself and enjoyed the statistics that were included).
After all, Memorial Day to many also means the start of summer!

How much do you think the summer months will cost you? Anything in the infographic below surprise you? What are you doing today?
MyMoneyDesign says
That $1,145 per person per vacation is probably about right. We usually spend about $3K just for the flight and hotel.
Michelle Schroeder-Gardner says
Do you churn cards?
Thomas @ i need cash ASAP! says
This makes total sense. We usually have a wedding or two each summer. Plus vacations, BBQs and parties, it all starts to add up quickly.
We try to keep our vacation costs down by going camping. We go three or four times over the summer for a total cost of ~$600.
Michelle Schroeder-Gardner says
Great job!
Giulia says
Well this summer I am going to work till the end of July and use free weekend for miny gateways absolutely low cost, a mix between staycation and little holiday, but I have always a budget to respect!!!
Michelle Schroeder-Gardner says
Sounds like fun 🙂
Ramona says
Love the infographic. It’s true in many cases we know (our family included).
Michelle Schroeder-Gardner says
I agree!
Natalie @ Financegirl says
These stats are interesting! I spend significantly less on everything, yet I make more than most people – I assume this is because I’m getting out of student loan debt.
Michelle Schroeder-Gardner says
I spend less as well. I love saving money! 🙂
Mrs. Frugalwoods says
Our vacations tend to be pretty frugal (and we often use points/travel hacking to make them cheaper), but I can see how a vacation could cost that much. And, I think this is our first summer in quite awhile that we’re not traveling a lot for friends’ weddings. I love weddings, but it does get expensive!
Michelle Schroeder-Gardner says
Yes, they do! I love them though 🙂
Kalie says
We will definitely spend some dough on vacation this summer, but we save by renting a home with 2 other families and not traveling too far (by car). We also go camping (just got back from a weekend trip), which is very inexpensive, fun, and great for the kids–probably better than summer camp which is fun but kind of artificial. I will spending a ton this summer to travel to India for a 2-week missions trip. But I think it’ll be worth the cost to help others and hopefully gain some perspective on the world & my life.
Michelle Schroeder-Gardner says
Sounds like a fun summer!
Niomi@Financially Confident says
I’m hoping to do some low-cost camping in Colorado this summer. I still need to get most of the gear–hoping I can score some good deals through Craigslist and REI garage sales!
Michelle Schroeder-Gardner says
Love REI garage sales! Have you scored anything good?
Niomi says
Yes! I once got a $200 Marmot rain jacket for $30! It just had a slight scratch on the inside–hardly noticeable at all.
Amy @ DebtGal says
This hits on my family’s largest-ticket items for the summer – a vacation in Maine and summer camp for my daughter. We’re driving to Maine, but still have to pay for hotel and meals. I’ll do my best to keep meal costs under control by bringing breakfast foods and snacks. Still, I’m really looking forward to enjoying a lobster roll or two… 🙂
Michelle Schroeder-Gardner says
Yummm! 🙂
Holly@ClubThrifty says
Some of my friends are sending their kids to summer camp. It is crazy expensive! I’m glad my kids aren’t old enough to ask yet!
Michelle Schroeder-Gardner says
Haha yay!
Brian says
I am not looking forward to summer camp expenses. I know there are several in the state and they range from very affordable to HOLY COW that’s insane.
Michelle Schroeder-Gardner says
How much are they typically? I went to a few when I was little. I always begged my parents but luckily mine were pretty cheap.
Allison @ Frugal on the Prairie says
I think it’s awesome that 71% of people will spend less than $1,000 on a vacation! We are taking advantage of credit card rewards and other perks. We don’t have to worry about hotel expenses so we’re “cheating” in that regard. But this year we will spend less than $500 on our family of three for a week in Florida.
Michelle Schroeder-Gardner says
$500 is awesome!
Michelle Schroeder-Gardner says
Good luck! 🙂
Jason B says
I’m a fan of infographics. I’m surprised that only 46% of people that make over 100K budget for a vacation. I thought the number would be higher.
Michelle Schroeder-Gardner says
I enjoy reading infographics as well!
