When it comes to online threats, such as hacks, identity theft or data breaches, most of us think it will never happen to us. But just last year, millions of people were affected by at least one of the many online security breaches, and even I was one of them.
Some of the most popular and publicized attacks were against major companies, such as eBay, Target, Home Depot, and J.P. Morgan Chase. Thankfully none of my information was actually stolen; however I think I can attribute that to one thing – my passwords.
With the large number of online threats that we face today, it’s more important than ever to make sure that you’re taking the proper steps to keep your personal and financial information safe online. There’s a few different ways that you can do this, but I’ve found that the most important place to start is with your passwords. Here are some of password security’s best practices:
Use a different password for every site.
Think about it, if you’re using the same password for every site, a hacker just needs that one password to access ALL of your information.
Use only strong, unique passwords that are made up of numbers and letters.
If you’re still using your dog’s name as your password, or any other personal information, you must update those passwords.
Don’t keep a list of your logins and passwords anywhere.
All it takes is one bad Wi-Fi network to expose that list to hackers.
I’ll be the first to admit that I never used to follow these tips myself. It sounds like a lot of effort, doesn’t it? But, as the list of websites that I was logging into on a daily basis, most which used to usually manage some sort of personal or financial information, I realized I needed to step my game up, which is why I was happy to come across RoboForm password manager.
Here’s how RoboForm helps:
Saves me time.
We all know that time is money, so the low expense of only $19.95 a year (only $9.95 for the first year) to never have to remember or type another password again is well worth the cost.
Creates strong passwords for me.
RoboForm has a built in password generator that I use to create a new password any time I need it. Bonus: Then I can just save my new password in RoboForm with one click.
Protects my online data.
RoboForm encrypts all of my logins and passwords behind one Master Password (which only I know and doesn’t get stored anywhere).
RoboForm has also decided to partner with me and offer you their RoboForm Everywhere product for 20% off. Just use the code ‘MSC20’ at checkout ($7.95 offer valid until 2/28/2015).
RoboForm Everywhere allows you to access your RoboForm data from anywhere; on any laptop or desktop computer (with or without RoboForm installed) and on my phone with their free mobile app. I can tell you that getting set up with RoboForm takes no more than five minutes and its interface is one of the easiest to use.
Bonus Tip: RoboForm just officially released their new college program, RoboFormU, where they’re offering the fully functioning RoboForm Everywhere software, entirely free, to anyone with a higher educational email address (such as students, faculty, and staff). So, be sure to take advantage of this offer if you can here: http://www.roboform.com/promotions/college-verify
