A visit to Miami can get expensive fast, but if you're visiting this great city while on a budget, don't despair. By taking advantage of free and inexpensive activities, you can do a lot in Miami without spending too much!
Walk Around the Art Deco District
You can take a tour of the Art Deco District in the South Beach area, or you can simply walk around for free and enjoy the 20s and 30s architecture. Check out the beach-inspired Art Deco architecture unique to Miami.
Hang out on the Beach
The ultimate free activity in Miami is to enjoy the beach. Miami's year round hot weather means this activity is open to you whether you go in January or July. If you want to swim, head over to the 85th Street beach. For shells, Bal Harbour Beach is the stretch of sand you'll want to visit. Of course, you can always visit the famous South Beach, where you might even spot a celebrity on vacation.
Find A Cheap Hotel
One of the best ways to save money in Miami is by finding the right hotel (just like staying in the wrong one can really break your budget). Hop online and check out some Miami hotels with personality and affordability, like the New Yorker Boutique Hotel or the Doubletree Club Miami Airport. The Miami Beach Resort and Spa is in a cool 40s era building and isn't far from the beach.
Attend Free Cultural Events on Fridays
Every third Friday of the month, non-profit organization The Rhythm Foundation throws Big Night in Little Haiti. It's a free event full of food, art, and music, showcasing Haitian culture. On the fourth Friday of each month check out Viernes Culturales, a free arts and music festival centered around Domino Plaza in Little Havana. You'll find some great and inexpensive food in Little Havana, and you can take one of Miami's free trolleys right to the festival too. Visit Little Havana on any day of the week for good food at a great price.
Take Advantage of Free Museum Days
If you know where and when to go, you can see a good portion of Miami's museums absolutely free. On the last Sunday of the month, visit the Bass Museum of Art from 2-4pm. The Lowe Art museum has donation day on the first Tuesday of the month, meaning you can get in for as little as you want (or for nothing at all). The Patricia and Philip Frost Art museum has perpetual free admission.
See a Free Movie
In the cooler months (from December until May) SoundScape, a projection wall 7,000 square feet large, hosts free movies almost every week. They start at 8PM and usually happen on Wednesdays or Thursdays. North Shore Park Bandshell also hosts free outdoor movies during the winter and spring season.
Enjoy Miami without worrying how much you're spending. By saving money in a few key areas, you'll have a fun beach vacation without any bank account stress when you get home.
