When each person in a community works to conserve energy, bills are lower overall. This means that more funds can be spent to support local businesses. It also sets a standard for other neighborhoods.
A few little changes in your lifestyle can make a big difference. From changing to more efficient light bulbs to using solar exterior lighting, these changes are easy to make.Energy saving, especially where wind turbines are used, helps the energy source to be more efficient.

Change Light Bulbs
Rather than using the old, traditional light bulb, switch to CFL or LED light bulbs. These are more efficient and consume less energy. The light emitted from these bulbs is also more pure. Whiter light causes less strain on the eyes. Essentially, these bulbs are made to make light from light sources to seem more natural.
CFL and LED light bulbs last longer as well. CFL bulbs last an average of 10,000 usage hours. LED bulbs can last up to 10 years.
Set Lights to Timers
When in a hurry, families often forget to turn lights off. This uses unnecessary amounts of energy which can raise bills. Setting lights to timers corrects this blunder.Timers can also be set to turn lights on a few minutes before returning home. Leaving lights on consumes excess energy.
When you are on vacation, many people leave their lights on as a theft deterrent which uses loads of energy. But set lights on timers during the evening hours when families are usually home and potential intruders will think that someone is in and will refrain from entering.
Reduce Usage during Peak Times
Peak hours are usually from 5pm in the evening until 9pm during the week. If you use less energy during these times, when rates can be higher, it will help to conserve energy.
Not all areas have peak usage hours. It is important to inquire with your energy company regarding this.
During summer months, these peak times can be extended due to increased air conditioner usage. Air conditioners, especially window units, pull a lot of energy.
Ways to decrease air conditioner running time:
- Insulate the home better
- Use home window tinting film
- Install mini-blinds
- Use curtains that block out light
- Keep windows and doors closed during the day
- Open windows overnight
- Use a ceiling fan to circulate the cool air throughout the home
Take Shorter Showers
Limit the time that each family member has to take a shower. Hot water heaters require the use of electricity to provide the heated water. If each family member is limited to 10 minutes, it is a great reduction in energy consumption.
Showering longer during off-peak hours should be allowed. Children are often in bed by 9pm during the week, so it is ideal to limit their shower time. Make sure that the time given is an ample amount of time to complete a total body hygiene routine.
Use Exterior Lights that are on Sensors
For homeowners that prefer to use outdoor lighting for safety, motion sensor lights are ideal. Flood lights traditionally use a great deal of energy to run. Motion sensor lights only stay on for a short period of time. This can be a huge savings for those that entertain a lot or have regular company in the evening hours.
The lights will not turn on during daylight hours as they do have sensors built-in to detect the amount of sunlight shone on them.
Solar External Lighting
Solar lights work by absorbing UV rays and energy from the sun to power them during the evening and overnight hours. They typically will not last as long on cloudier days. Solar lights use no household electricity at all and add nothing to your energy bill.
These measures, if taken by all citizens, can save renewable energy sources. In return, this results in lower energy bills. Energy conservation does not require many lifestyle changes.
The changes above are minimal and fit into any lifestyle. It just takes a conscious effort to maintain these practices. After a brief period of time, energy conservation becomes a habit, or second nature, rather than a chore.
