The record level of rain this year has suddenly changed the playing field when it comes to spring breaks, in many cases, into a water polo venue. Vast swathes of the UK are now no go areas with transport links severed. The predictions are that even without more rain the ground water levels will result in sustained flooding for many weeks to come. Meanwhile, spring is on the way and everyone is feeling the need to escape the storms and deluge.
Big savings can be had in affected areas, especially as others cancel bookings. The weather has to improve before your arrival, surely. The local tourist industry will be very grateful for your business, even at reduced rates. Legally, if your accommodation is made uninhabitable through flooding you would be entitled to a refund. If it is cut off but still dry you might have to rely on the best travel insurance to bail you out.
Most of us would like some guaranteed good weather and spring in Southern Europe is ideal for losing your winter pallor. There are considerable savings to be had by booking private holiday accommodation directly from the owners. The facilities can vary considerably so a bit of research is essential. Look for on line reviews for advice and always book with a credit card for peace of mind. Villas sleeping six or more offer considerable savings compared to hotel bookings.
The general rule when booking a package holiday is that the later you leave it, the cheaper it gets, as travel agents rush to fill pre-ordered flights and hotels. Choice is limited to what is still available of course. This year however, there could well be a shortage. The unusual weather will persuade a lot more people to head abroad. Prices could go up if demand exceeds supply.
There are still clever ways to get bargain hotel rooms. One of my favourite tips is that top end establishments sell off empty rooms through third party web sites anonymously. This avoids regular clients booking cheaply when they would normally pay full whack. The web sites still list a description of location and facilities and if you cut and paste this into a search engine you will usually identify the correct hotel. Expect to achieve reductions of 50% or more on advertised rates.
Home exchanging is another great way to achieve spring savings. There are a number of swap sites available that could link you up with someone else anywhere in the World. The fees charged vary considerably so seek some advice before joining.
Finally, it can be worth joining the loyalty schemes for several hotel chains. Don’t look to build up points for freebies as you will have to spend a lot to get anything back. Instead wait for special offers to drop through your letter box. Also, if you do use that chain, enquire about discounts and upgrades, as a ‘loyal’ customer you are far more likely to be offered special treatment.
