Freelancing is something that I have been doing for a few years now, and I have been really serious about it for over a year. It started out as a side job so that I could pay down my student loans a little bit more quickly. It is now my full-time business that I love to do. Many people ask me for freelancing tips, so here you go!
Have a website that lists your services/products.
Something that I have not done yet is have a designated website for what I do. However, I sort of use Making Sense of Cents for that. Soon, I plan on creating a separate website dedicated to my work and what I do that is separate from Making Sense of Cents.
Regardless of what you choose, have some sort of website. If people don't know what you do, then it can be hard for them to find you.
Have social media accounts.
Do you have a Twitter account? What about a Facebook account? These are very important if you want to start freelancing. You need to interact with others in your industry and potential customers as well.
Having social media accounts can help you get out there and market yourself, but you may need to do other things as well. Make yourself some business cards and attend a conference where you can sell your services. Introduce yourself to as many people as you can, and of course be friendly.
Something that I want to do soon is start asking for testimonials. I haven't done that yet, and I would like to start. I always ask for immediate feedback after I complete a job, but I would like to ask for a testimonial so that I can publish it on my future freelancing-dedicated website so that future customers can see it.
You might not be able to work from home.
I love working from home, but I have met several other freelancers who prefer to work in a designated office that is separate from their home. You could use something such as Barristers Chambers Office Rental.
