Dental care is very expensive. Recently, I heard someone talking and he was saying that he needed around $20,000 in dental work done. The number shocked me. How could any “average” person pay for $20,000 in dental work?
I recently read that approximately 40% of people between the ages of 60 to 80 have cavities. The problem with this is that many seniors do not have dental insurance, which can mean that paying for expensive dental work can seem nearly impossible.
So, how can a person save money?
A way to save on dental work is to possibly find quality work overseas and thereby cutting the potential dental costs. A site called Dental Departures has built a global dental marketplace so that they can bring together customers with high quality global dental providers. There are currently over 2,200 dentists in 28 countries.
The site also has a tool that allows people to price out and compare dental services around the globe. Try it out!
Dental Departures was created by Paul McTaggart in Seattle. He made the following statement about why he created Dental Departures:
“My dad is a retired teacher in Canada. He worked hard all his life, retired with a great pension, saved aggressively like we're all supposed to. He would always tell me how expensive his dental bills were and they always kept going up in price, while his retirement income was going down. I figured being a member of the Internet-generation I could research how to find better quality dental care at less expensive prices. It was just impossible to find dental prices online, let alone prices for less than what he was paying.”
McTaggart when talking about dental tourism also stated that:
“… talked about saving seventy percent on your dental care when you visited places like Mexico, Costa Rica or Thailand. To me this made logical sense. This was the next step in globalization: the globalization of medical services. You could receive the same quality dental care at a fraction of the cost at home. I visited Thailand with my wife, my mother & newborn daughter for vacation and took a week to check out dental clinics in Bangkok…they were amazing.”
Dental Departures ensures the quality of the dental providers in their network. How do they do that? The engage in the following steps so that each customer receives the quality work that they are expecting.
- A dental office first submits an application to them.
- A team member at Dental Departures reviews the application form for anything that may be wrong or against their standards. Dental Departures then researches the dental office and those who work there.
- Then, a member of Dental Departures actually visits the physical office, such as a dentist in Mexico, to make sure that everything is correct.
- Dental Departures also makes sure that the dental office is up-to-date and compliant with local regulations.
