November 28 is considered the official start of the holiday season as families come together to enjoy the Thanksgiving weekend together. The holiday weekend is a time to share a love for good food, a love for exciting football, and advice for managing money responsibly throughout the rest of the season.
The Thanksgiving weekend has long been considered one of the most important holidays in the US. Airports and train stations collectively describe the expected traffic for the Thanksgiving weekend as the busiest travel season in the entire year, with families from across the country doing all they can to make it home for dinner.
Dinner is, for many families the second part of the day’s activities, following an afternoon of football. The Thanksgiving Day football matches are among the most popular in the NFL, watched by millions of families who crowd around their TVs every year.
But in recent years, the holiday has become equally known for the Black Friday sales across the country. Though the day is not a federal holiday like Thanksgiving, many states recognize the ‘Day After Thanksgiving’ as a day off for many employees.
These workers take to their favourite retailers in an effort to cash in on sales for holiday gifts at incredibly discounted prices. While many people love the Black Friday sales, it is very easy for people to overspend on their credit cards as the thought of sales often trumps thoughts about the spending budget. Black Friday is only the beginning of the shopping season, and overspending on this day can make gift shopping over the rest of the holidays very difficult.
Thankfully there is thanksgiving to be thankful for – or rather, a special online thanksgiving football contest. Before families gather for their favourite turkey day games, they can put their love of the NFL to good use in an online promotion. For eight days leading up to thanksgiving, football fans can guess the stadium visited by the LowestRates.com mascot, who is organizing the promotion.
A photo featuring the mascot will be uploaded to Facebook each day, and participants can submit their guesses as to which stadium is in the background. At the conclusion of the promo, the organizers will announce a winner who will receive a special $500 cash prize – which can be used to help make the Black Friday shopping more affordable.
Who says a love of sports can’t lead to anything rewarding? Start the holidays off with a family bonding brain teaser, and you could have an extra $500 this shopping season.
