At least once every year (most likely every couple of months) I go through our monthly budget and try to see if there are any major things I can do to lower our “fixed” expenses. A major expense can mean pretty much anything for me. I can save $10? I'm on top of that then!
Of course there is only so much you can lower per year when it comes to contracts and bills that you have, so usually once a year seems to be the best and most efficient use of my time.
Our monthly budget including all expenses such as our mortgage, car payment, gas, car insurance, food, student loans and everything else is currently a little less than $3,000 per month. So our bills really aren't too high (or too low either) and I'm always trying to save a dollar here or there. If I can call up a company and save $5 a month for the next year in return for 25 minutes of my time, I'm usually all for it because what else would I be doing in those 25 minutes? I'm not better than that 🙂
Below are some tips on how to save the most money with the bills that you have by playing companies off on one another.
Play companies off each other
One major thing I can is play the companies that I use off on each other in order to get the best price. Just like when bidding prices at different companies. Sometimes the prices can range so widely it seems like.
I'm sure there is a competitor for most of your bills that you have. For us, we always like to save the most money with our cable television contract. There always seems to be SOME sort of deal out there that a cable television company is offering to entice a new customer to come to them.
Have you ever heard of Energy Help Line? For my UK readers, you can use the comparison tool that Energy Helpline offers The tool is very useful and can help you lower parts of your monthly budget.
You can use it to find cheaper utility rates for your electricity and gas For where I live, I'm pretty much stuck using what I have since there's a monopoly. It seems very unfair that while our gas and electric bills seem to always be increasing, that these energy companies are still making a decent amount of money! This was why EnergyHelpline.com was created, so that consumers can find and switch to cheaper providers.
There are many cities where you can bid your competitors against each other in order to get the best value and deal. Of course this only works when they are competitors, but it works even better and more to your advantage when there are direct competitors who essentially offer the same exact product. If you can get a better price/deal for the same exact product, then why not go for it? I know I would!
The tool that Energy Help Line offers is a free and independent service used by those who are responsible for their household budget. It is a great tool for families who are trying to lower their budgets and save money. What family does not want to save money? Everyone does!
