I tend to feel guilty when I take a day off or go on a vacation. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks like this. The U.S. is number 1 in not using all of their vacations days.
I'm always reading about how other countries get a lot more vacation and sick days then those in the U.S., and yet us in the U.S. don't even use all of our days. Why don't we relax more? Why don't we value vacations?
It just makes no sense to me. Yet, I also understand why.
Why I feel bad
Some of this probably has to do with the fact that with my old job, vacations were not allowed. And if you went on one, you were in big trouble. If you just needed one day off, that was a problem as well.
I remember I tried taking off for the day after my 21st (it was the only day I requested off in 5 years and I asked for it months ahead of time), and I was yelled at for asking for the day off and yet I was scheduled anyways (yeah not a fun day to work).
If there was family coming in town, I would not be allowed to go. Christmas dinner? Yeah right, that wasn't allowed. Working on Father's Day when it's the most depressing day on earth for you? Oh yeah no big deal for me, according to my work.
Keep in mind that I was a manager, and there were tons of other people who were always able to work. And I worked every year on my birthday, Christmas Eve, Black Friday, Mother's Day, Father's Day, New Years Day & Eve, the tax-free holidays, etc. Oh the joy of retail and a horrible boss who went home 5 hours early everyday and made me work twice as long as her (but that's a whole ‘nother story).
Anyways, before I get too carried away about my old job (which you can guess how I felt about it), this is why I most likely feel bad. I don't want my boss that I have now to feel like I'm taking advantage of them.
And I do realize that the world of retail and the world of financial services are completely different, but that's not what I'm trying to say. Being able to take a vacation day should be allowed. And the employee shouldn't feel bad about it.
So, now with the job I have now, I tend to feel bad when I take off for a vacation. My work is much more flexible though, I don't really need to ask and it's always ok to go on vacation or take the day off.
I still do ask them though if it's alright. They have told me that it's weird that I ask and why wouldn't it be alright? Of course there are busy work times when I can't request off, but for the most part, it is alright.
Most companies WANT you to take your vacation though. They know that all work and no play is not good for productivity. I recently read an article where some companies are paying their employees to go on vacation (a couple thousand all the way up to $10,000 is what I've seen in some articles).
