I read an interest article on WiseBread about a “what if” question of whether or not you would eat bugs and roadkill to lower your food budget. I would not. Not under any circumstance because I gag really easily and I am a complete germaphobe, and eating that would make me feel sick.

Yes yes I know. The meat I eat comes from an animal that is killed, but in my head I think of it differently.

The article talks about a guy who:

“He doesn’t kill these animals, mind you — just finds them, butchers, and cooks ’em up.McGowan will even throw some bugs into his stir fry”

There’s even tips in the article about how to eat roadkill and bugs.

What do you think? Grossed out?

To reduce the food budget – no, to survive – yes. Rice and beans are cheap.

Agree with Jennifer – survival is different from frugality, and for frugality no way. I might dumpster-dive though, if I found a community of people who knew how to navigate that. I read a book recently that opened my eyes to how much perfectly good food is wasted in the US.

I'm with Jennifer on this one. To me, that crosses the line between being cheap and being frugal. To survive, I would and not think it twice. But to save a few bucks? No thanks.

Noooooo. Well except for what Mia said. If a steak landed on top of me I would probably eat it but everything else–possum, raccoon, etc–yuck.

I ate a chocolate-covered grasshopper while on vacation in Asia…does that count?? Haha…But seriously, only if it were my only means of survival. Otherwise, heck no!

I agree with you. I wouldn't eat that kind of stuff. Who knows how long it has been dead when he finds it. I am grateful I have never been desperate enough to eve consider eating like that.

Can't say that I would… Coming from someone who eat local & organic meat daily, I'd go "veggie" before I ate something I found on the side of the road. lol! Bugs don't really gross me out as much, but I still wouldn't eat them. 😉
