Savvy Sugar had an article on how golfing helps your career and it’s something that I’ve been wondering about. In my career, golf helps a LOT. My boss has golf clubs in his office and clients always want to meet and talk over golf.
Also, whenever I go to meetings, clients and my bosses are always talking about golf and I just stand there awkwardly because of course I don’t play and I don’t know anything about golf past what I know about mini-golf.
I always think about taking up golf. I have some guy friends who golf ALL the time, so I could just ask them to help me. Here’s how golf can help:
- Networking opportunities. As I said above, it would help me a lot. I would have something that I could connect to with my clients about.
- Makes a great first impression. I feel that if I knew how to golf, my clients would think a little higher of me. I wouldn’t just be the “girl” in my field. They would be able to connect to me and might then therefore be able to remember me easier.
- Relieves stress and is fun. My friends always say how fun it is and how it helps them relax. However, I find this hard to believe. For some reason, I have no interest in it. Anyone have any input? Tell me if you like it or not.
What helps your career? Would playing golf help yours?

Well… yes and no. Our field/business/niche is so small that we really can't network for advancement or transfers (though later when I switch jobs in a few years, I think that would be something to consider). I personally don't like golf and would much prefer tennis, but people seem to have the wrong perception about it (rich snobs play tennis, but business people play golf?). Definitely something to think about, thanks for sharing.

I don't golf but know that it wouldn't hurt if I wanted to. I think this golfing thing is probably most applicable to more conservative, male-dominated fields like Ibanking, law, or politics. I think networking in general would really help my career, but thankfully there are other opportunities than golfing, because even if I enjoyed golfing otherwise, I think I'd find it stressful to have to do so as part of my job.

I think My money, my life said it exactly right…stressful as it's part of your job. I tried golfing a few times this summer since everyone who golfed was essentially getting a couple of hours off on Fridays. I tried it a couple of times and thought it was quite enjoyable, then I just couldn't get myself to go anymore…all the people at work are great but it was still work :(.I think I suck at networking too..

I've totally been in this position. I think golf is definitely worth knowing about for the small fact that so many successful people consider it such a big part of their down time. thanks for sharing, love. I've got a new fash trend report. Love to hear what you think. x ohttp://fashboulevard.blogspot.com/

Being in the financial services industry, very much a boys club, playing golf does help. Many productive conversations arise as a result of time spent on the golf course, and has translated into business for me. I don't enjoy it, so I don't play that often but at major conferences it helps. Good luck!

Thanks everyone. I'm probably going to have to start. I work in the financial services industry like thirtytherapy, so it's kind of needed.

I think its a shame you may need to take up something that doesn't interest you just to be included more in work, though I totally get it! In the past I've thought the same about smokers, they chat and network a couple times a day… Maybe it'll be enough to go a few times and just learn the game? That way you'll be able to join in the talk at least? Hope it works out for you whatever you do 🙂

If you look at it from a [side hustle millionaire] in the making sport of you, the thing that may help their career is having an average paying job whereas faith feel obligated to save more fair paycheck for PPC advertising and paying their hosting bill years ahead of time. This may help their side hustle online marketing career because they know when the real world, employment stability no longer exists. This is why most people forced would be option to sync or swim tend to stay in their day jobs, while others take a risk believing in themselves and end up a “side hustle millionaire.” 🙂
