I’m hoping this isn’t going to sound too crazy, but I’ve thought about this a couple of times.  Making my own dog food appeals to me because I feel like I could create better and more healthy food for my dogs.   This isn’t really about saving money, because I’m pretty sure making your own dog food is actually more expensive once you include all the meats that you need.  Many vets say making your own dog food is better, as long as you do it right. Check out this article on WebMD about homemade dog food also.

Here are advantages from this website:

  1. A longer lifespan
  2. Shinier coat
  3. Fewer skin problems
  4. More energetic
  5. More healthy
  6. Better tasting

Here are some recipes:

  1. Lucky and Rippy’s Favorite Dog Food
  2. Homemade Dog Food

Have you ever thought about making your own dog food?

I’d like to get everyone’s input on this, as long as no one calls me crazy!

If it wasn't so expensive I would. As it is now, I sometimes mix the girls food with a beef/rice blend but to do it all the time I think would be too much money

You're sooo crazy.I completely kidding. I think it's a great idea if it is something you really feel passionate about. I know there was a scare a couple years ago with melamine in manufactured dog food. It has to be healthier making from scratch, like people food. 🙂

I bought a dog treat cook book once. But am worried how awful my kitchen will smell. My aunt is a vet so she had recommended some good brands. We feed my dogs Freshpet Select http://freshpet.com/product/freshpetadultchicken/ I always look to see if the first 5 ingredients have meat by products, corn, grains, etc. If there is anything like that in the first 5 ingredients I immediately put away. I try to avoid anything with meat by-products in it.

I feel pretty good about feeding Elvis his Natural Balance food on a regular basis, but sometimes my husband will make wet dog food for him. Or if we eat something that's ok for him, we mix in a little bit with his dinner. Seriously, this dog has had filet mignon. He also gets eggs on a fairly regular basis, they give him such a shiny, gorgeous coat!

My parents make their dogs' food every week. A mix of meat, veggies, and a tiny bit of spaghetti and tomato paste, add some vitamins… done. The girls have never looked better and their stomachs don't bloat anymore. I say give it a try!

We usually scramble Elvis's eggs, though my husband has been known to poach an egg for him as well. Not spoiled at all. 😉
